How to Monetize an App Without Ads

September 30, 2026 · 6 min read

Ads need a crowd. A small app can charge for the job instead.

Pick one paid thing

A subscription if they need it every week. A one-time purchase if the tool keeps working offline. A paid add-on if the free app already does a real smaller job. Not all three on day one.

Say the price in the store and on the paywall

Check Apple and Google's current commission before you decide the price is enough. Do not hide a subscription behind a "continue" button.

Market the paid job

People who arrive from a free tip will not pay. Slideshows should describe what the payment unlocks. Alma drafts those from your app link. Put your real price in your own words if the draft is vague, then schedule them. $29/month for 500 slides, or $199/month with no cap.

Make the posts for your app

Paste your App Store or website link. Alma writes, designs and schedules the slideshows.

Start in Make

Let them finish one useful action first

Then show the price for doing it again, saving it, or adding a second person. A paywall on the first pixel is a brochure.

Watch charges, not installs

If installs grow and charges do not, the lock is on the wrong feature or the posts never mentioned payment. Fix that before you add an ad network out of panic.
